5 Ways To Save Big On Moving Costs
Six years ago Don and I moved with our six-month-old son cross country from Los Angeles to New York, and it cost us $5,000. Yikes.
We just moved again, into our Blue Cottage, and when I add up all the moving costs for this time, I get to about $200.
How was I able to move a household of three bedrooms for only $200?
With a lot of willingness to do everything ourselves, including driving the truck, and finding a thrifty way to get free packing materials.
We only moved 10 minutes down the street, so this time we didn’t have to relocate two cars, but no matter how far you move, my five tips about how to save on moving costs will still help you do it for less.
5 Ways To Save Big On Moving Costs
1: Have a Garage Sale or Donate Unnecessary Items
Before you pack up anything, declutter and have a tag sale. Or donate all unnecessary items to .charity
The more you can get rid of before you start boxing up your belongings, the better – for three reasons: less to box up, less to move, and you might get away with a smaller moving truck.
My biggest regret after our latest move: not realizing that the heaviest furniture piece, a large entertainment center that weighs over 250 pounds, doesn’t even work in our new house. If you can, figure out the layout of your furniture before you move and get rid of those items that don’t fit in your new space.
2: Don’t hire a mover and rent a truck
Grain Sack Striped Cotton Ironing Board Cover
I was flipping through the latest Country Living magazine and stopped in my tracks when I saw this: a striped cotton ironing board cover, for $19.
Now, I hardly ever use my ironing board, and I don’t buy much online, but this I’m going to order.
If you are as obsessed as I am about pretty linens or love the country, farmhouse, or shabby chic home decorating style, you might be as exited as I am: this cover will make any ironing board standing in the corner look like art! [Read more…]
DIY Dresser Makeover With Wallpaper and Glue Dots
Dresser Makeover With Wallpaper and Glue Dots
After simply dusting off my new little dresser and giving it a coat of wood spray, the outside looked wonderful. But there was one more thing I wanted to do.
On the day I scored the dresser at the tag sale, I also picked up these rolls of pretty Waverly toile wallpaper for only $5. One of these can run as much as $35 in the store.
When I brought both home, something just clicked and I decided to use the wallpaper as drawer liners.
Step-by-step tutorial of how I attached the wallpaper to the drawers:
All you need is
- wallpaper
- glue dots
- a pencil or crayon
- scissors
I took out one drawer and put it on the wallpaper. Then I lined up two corners on the edge of the paper and traced around the other two sides. [Read more…]
Interior Design Inspirations From My Anthropologie Visit
When I lived in Los Angeles, I strolled into an Anthropologie store in Santa Monica one day — and never wanted to leave again.
These stores always have the most beautiful displays of their funky and vintage home decorating items.
Landon and I visited the Anthropologie store in the Westchester Mall in White Plains a few weeks ago. I had a business meeting nearby, and just had to combined it with a stop there.
What are your favorite items in Anthropologie? When I walk in, I always check out their kitchen and dining decorating items first. I want their pretty glasses, measuring cups, soap dispensers, kitchen towels… There isn’t much I don’t like!
I love how they always decorate in a surprising way — here L is checking out the coffee beans they used to display spice jars with chalkboard labels. [Read more…]
