I adore mason jars.

You can find mason jars all over my house — a collection of vintage blue mason jars and many new ones I store things in.
It’s a new year, time for organizing, and I recently made a small change in the kitchen I’m pretty happy with: I updated the mason jars I use to store dry goods and sweets in with white plastic lids.

As you can see, some of the lids were gold and some silver. So when I found inexpensive, BPA-free white plastic lids for mason jars, I bought a box of big plastic lids and a box of small ones to update my jars.

I think the white lids go better with our white kitchen. Plus, they kind of look unexpected and cool. Have you seen white mason jar lids before? I hadn’t.
These lids are also so much more practical. We open and close these jars every day, and having to juggle two lid pieces — the top and the lid ring — is harder than just having these white plastic lids now.

I love your post on the Mason Jars and your Pinterest board! I have friends that work with a local company that makes mason jar flip caps and is now bringing out a shaker cap! I found them at Walmart. I really like them for storing leftovers and small amounts of dry items (pasta, flour, sesame seeds, candy, etc.). The only thing that folks should know is the lids are not as tight as the metal rings, so liquids will leak out of the plastic lids. I like to make iced tea at home and take a quart jar of tea to work; if I am careful and keep the jar completely upright, I can use the plastic lid but if it tips even slightly, the bottom of my insulated lunch bag gets wet. I will either put a piece of saran wrap between the jar and the plastic lid or use the metal lid and ring for beverages. I do use the plastic lids for soup, which usually is thick enough not to leak.

Hi Nance, thanks for all those tip! Since I only use the lids on jars with dry goods that sit in our kitchen, I hadn’t noticed that.

Have you tried to use the metal lid with the plastic lid to keep it from spilling? I remember we would reuse the rings on different batches of canned goods and then jelly would end up in the fridge with saved mayonnaise jar lids. Not the same thing at all but that’s what made me think of of the possibility. I think it could possibly get stuck in the white top though.
