Easy and Inexpensive Closet Makeover
I don’t know about you, but I need to get something done every day or I feel a bit lazy.
I’m pretty happy with what I got done this Saturday!
I also cleaned up my porch, and I finally decluttered the coat closet!
This is my coat closet between the living room and kitchen.
You might remember it from my post about my kitchen and laundry “closet,” which is right next to it.
When we moved into the Blue Cottage, I shoved all kinds of boxes into the coat closet, and that’s what it still looked like for the longest time.
Aside from our jackets and vests, there are tennis rackets, boxes full of items I need to photograph to resell, four hanging shoe organizers, and all kinds of other clutter in there.
I was sick of not being able to close the sliding doors because the closet was so filled up. After my bathroom closet makeover, I was itching to declutter this closet.

I did, and I made over the closet for just $20!
I found turquoise hanging shoe organizers on sale for $5 at TJMaxx, and two packs of 8 white wood hangers from IKEA. I bought two sets the last time I was at IKEA.
Here are inexpensive shoe organizers and wooden hangers you can buy on Amazon:
You can get this shoe organizer in different colors.
I wanted to get rid of the many different hangers we were using to make the coat closet look nice, plus these are the kind of hangers heavy jackets should hang on so they don’t get dented.
First, I took everything out of the closet and vacuumed it. Then I added the two new shoe organizers and started filling them with shoes I wanted to keep.
I ended up with a big bag of shoes I’m going to donate.
I hung the white hangers in the closet and started to hang the jackets we currently need. All the winter jackets are going into the attic.
This is what the cleaned-up, decluttered, organized closet looks like now!
I nailed a pretty hook on one side of the closet to keep all my scarfs in one spot from now on, and then I added several baskets to the shelf that will hold all kinds of odds and ends.
I love these wall hooks!
And since there was space, I also put my box full of ribbons on the shelf. Eventually I’ll paint over those screws — it’s on my never-ending DIY project list, ha!
This is what the shoes look like now, all organized.
I’m going to be on the lookout for two more of those new shoe organizers to make this look even nicer. And I’ll add a small area rug under the shoes for a pop of color.
I have more summer shoes and fancy shoe in my closet upstairs, but these are the ones we use more often.
This coat closet makeover only took an hour and $20, and I’m thrilled with the result. Onto the next closet!
We have several more that need a makeover.

I love how clean the white hangers look. Right now we store our shoes on shelves in the garage, but I’m liking those turquoise shoe organizers!
Congrats on being featured at Simple Organization Ideas on Organized 31!

Looks great! I like the idea of keeping everyone’s shoes all in one place. Seems like we always end up with 4-5 pairs each sitting by the door. I wonder though if my kids would actually put them in the organizer or just toss the shoes on the floor of the closet and walk away… ;)
Dagmar Bleasdale says
Hi Alayna, we have another pile of shoes right in front of the front door during the colder months, and on the porch during the warmer months. We don’t put our shoes into this organizer every day. That would be lovely, though :)

The closet looks great now! I love the turquoise shoe holders. $5 is a steal! Now, you’ve motivated me to tackle our pit of despair aka coat closet.

Hi Lisa,
I’m glad I inspired you :)

I love it when I have uncluttered and made an area over that was needing it. I need to organize my closet – soon, very soon. Thank you for the inspiration and for sharing at Share It One More Time. Cathy

Wow!! What a difference. I love the turquoise shoe holders and the hangers. I am organizing mine right now. It looked like a hurricane had hit prior.
