Some people go all out and remodel a whole room, and others just want to update something that doesn’t take too much time.
I’m into DIY projects that I can tackle by myself without help, and I like them to only take a few hours or maybe a day, like this one.
I never liked the black color of the headboard, but I love the shape and style of it, so I finally repainted it white.
It made such a huge difference in making the bedroom more cohesive with my farmhouse style.
And this one change makes the whole room look so much bigger now!
Let me take you on a tour of the changes I’ve made in the bedroom since I haven’t shown it to you for a while.
Here is a reminder of what the headboard looked like before:
Black and huge and bulky.
Painting a Headboard – Easy Bedroom Makeover
I literally have no black furniture in our house, most of it is white or brown, so this big king size headboard was such an eyesore.
I wasn’t looking forward to painting it — it meant moving my king bed, painting it with primer and then two coats to go from black to white, but I’m so glad I finally did it.
I bought all the painting supplies at Home Depot, but you can find everything you need on Amazon. I would not brave the crowds at home improvement stores over some paint and brushes right now – shop online.
I like this KILZ Premium High-Hide Stain Blocking Interior/Exterior Latex Primer/Sealer. The same says it all — it works for so many projects.
For white paint, just buy the most inexpensive, quality paint that has the best reviews, like this one:
I like chalk paint because it adheres so nicely to any surface. And this paint comes in may beautiful colors.
I already had plastic for the wall.
After moving the bed and taping up the wall and floor, the fun could begin. Since the headboard is screwed to the wall, I didn’t want to take it off the wall and just painted it in place.
I used a primer first, and then it took two coats to go from black to white.
And here you have it! Now this big headboard works so well in my bedroom.
If you like this headboard design, here is a similar one on Amazon. It’s surprisingly affordable!
It’s definitely more modern than I usually decorate, but it fits with my side table on the left that also has gold legs. You can see it when you scroll down a bit.
I love the big window I have in the bedroom. Since I have blinds, I haven’t felt the need to put up curtains, even though I have several curtain sets sitting in my closet.
The new striped bedspread is from HomeGoods. Here is a similar one:
Here is another classic farmhouse stripe bedding set:
The gold from the bench in front of the bed works great with the gold frames on the wall and this $19 gold table, also from HomeGoods.
It took me a while to find it because it had to be small but tall to fit into this corner.
The lamp is a tag sale find. Do you remember what an ugly lampshade it had? I called it the ugliest lamp ever in this post about it.
Since I was painting, I also painted the top of the IKEA bedside table to have it blend in more. It needs another coat, and I might also paint the door eventually.
All of these items are tag sale finds.
This dresser was Don’s parents’ dresser for many, many years — I think it was a wedding present for their wedding.
Don’s mom wanted to get rid of it when she moved years ago, and I said there is no way you are giving that away to a stranger – I want it.
I have use it for my clothes for years now, in the two apartments we lived in and now in our house.
My mom and I painted it with chalk paint during one of her visits, and I’m so glad we have this heirloom.
This mirror tray was also a tag sale find for just a few dollars, as well as the vintage watch. It actually works!
I added a stool from Target in this corner in front of the smaller closet and changed out the art work, and here is the office nook next to it.
I have since added a bigger bookcase and created a gallery wall of family pictures on the wall.
So there you have it — my headboard makeover that resulted in a whole bedroom refresh.
Knowing me, I’ll change things around again in a few week, but that’s part of the fun or making your home your own, right?
I want to encourage you to update your home as well! Look around — what furniture piece could use a new coat of paint?
