Discovering the Hudson Valley and Manhattan With My Mom

by Dagmar Bleasdale on May 22, 2012

My mom has been visiting from Germany for the last 10 days and we have had the best time. I rediscover places I already knew in the Hudson Valley and checked out new places with her.

Here is just a little taste of all the fun we’ve had.

We celebrated Mother’s Day together, the first time without my Papa:

We drove to Cold Spring:

We had a wonderful lunch at Richard Gere’s Bedford Post Inn Barn (the drive to Bedford is stunning and an experience in itself):

We watched L play soccer…

…and hiked Turkey Mountain:

We took the train to Manhattan, walked the High Line

…and ate at Chelsea Market:

Look who I found at the entrance of Chelsea Thai restaurant? My lactivist heart was in heaven — how cool is this statue of a nursing mom in plain sight?!

After walking the High Line from start to the end, we had High Tea at the famed Plaza Hotel. It’s $50 a person for a few tiny sandwiches and sweet threats. Frugal tip: share one and pay the $20 for the second person — it’s enough food for two.

My mom really wanted to see Franklin D. Roosevelt’s birth home and library, so we drove up the Hudson Valley for an hour to Hyde Park to check it out.

Roosevelt was born and buried there.

Rhinebeck, a quaint town in Northern Duchess County known for it’s antique store and beautiful houses, is only 10 minutes further and I finally got to check it out on this trip.

After a little treat…

…and shopping a this adorable stationary/gift store…

…we found Liberty Public House restaurant and oh, was I in love with how they decorated it!

After walking around some more in town, we ended up eating dinner there.

Bucket list alert!

The perfect day ended with the drive back to Katonah on the scenic Taconic Parkway, past more antique stores.

On Sunday, Don had the idea to drive to New Paltz. We had lunch in an Irish pub…

…just in time to see a cute parade…

…and somehow ended up at the Cupcake Festival. We had a blast!

Last night we went to the Blue Dolphin in Katonah with Don’s mom and now she’s packing to leave in a few hours.

Eleven days went by way too fast…
