A Wonderful Mother’s Day With My Mom

by Dagmar Bleasdale on May 13, 2012

This morning, I woke up to this: Mother’s Day cards and chocolate pretzels made by Landon, pancakes and coffee made by Don, and flowers picked outside by my mom.

What a wonderful Mother’s Day! What would’ve made it perfect is of course having my Papa here.

I love that my mom came to visit us for 10 days, but she is here because my dad died last August, and that is hard.

It’s my mom’s first Mother’s Day without my Dad, without three flower bouquets he would always buy her — the big one from him and two little ones “from” us kids.

He was always so thoughtful that way. He’d buy them the day before and “hide” them in the boiler room, so that he would have them in the morning ready for Mother’s Day.

The weather has been amazing since my mother came two days ago. So after breakfast we headed out to our annual trip to Muscoot Farm down the street. It’s sheep shearing day every Mother’s Day. Here is our last year’s visit.

After hiding in the old Milk House…

…and saying hi to all the animals, especially the new baby animals…

…we took a walk up to the gazebo.

It’s a really nice short walk with chances to climb.

We met a family of grandparents and parents with a little boy from Germany and talked to them for a bit about raising bilingual children.

On the way back, I found a little buddy for L on the ground and he got a ride.

After a snack and a stroll through Muscoot’s farmer’s market, which started today, we went back home.

While my mom and L are napping, I’m eating jelly beans and writing this, and later we will see the whole Bleasdale Clan at Don’s mother’s house. The kids will run around, we’ll have some yummy food, and sit together to talk about the latest happenings.

How are you celebrating Mother’s Day?

Sorry again about your Dad, these special days make it hard, I know. Am glad your Mum was able to have a nice day, though and you too!
Mother’s day is in March in the UK, so we didn’t do anything yesterday, except Skype my MiL in South Africa, ‘cos it is Mother’s Day there, so my husband and kids could wish her a happy day.
For my mother’s day, I requested “time”. So I had most of the day to do stuff I don’t get done, normally with the kids in tow. I cleaned the bathroom, (properly) and re-organised closets, and sorted through some stuff. I know that sounds terrible, but it was bliss to get it done, alone! ;) I did get coffee and croissants in bed for breakfast too though!
We have a German bakery near us, they make fabulous chocolate pretzels, I may have to go and get some this afternoon now! :)

Wish I could join you today.

Lots of love from Germany, please give Ma a big hug! Love you all,
