I loved Carolyn’s idea of Flashback Friday where you re-post an old blog post, and so I went on a hunt for a post that would be fun to revisit. A post you haven’t read yet unless you were around 2 1/2 years ago when I started Dagmar’s momsense and had four readers.
Here it is. How little Landon is in that picture!
How Many Vacuums Does it Take to Clean a House?
first posted on February 16, 2009
We now have four vacuums in our little house. I’ll explain.
The first one is my old Hoover Runabout Deluxe. There is nothing deluxe about it, but I’ve had it for about eight years now and it moved with us from California. I would love to update it and get one that has a HEPA filter, but I refuse to pay $600 for a vacuum! Who pays that kind of money for a vacuum?
The second one is a Dirt Devil Junior Vision that caught my eye in a local thrift store. Since Landon seemed to be obsessed, but also fears, the large vacuum, I thought he would love this little red toy vacuum that acts like a grown-up one and has little Styrofoam balls whirling around in the middle.
Sure enough, Landon loved it and would play with it every day until one of the little balls got stuck or something happened. Now it makes this hideous screeching noise and I refuse to put another four batteries in it. But Landon still plays with it without the noise.
The third one is a Dirt Devil Extra Power, one of those little cordless ones. It dies after only five minutes, and it’s never charged up enough when I need it because Landon plays with it as well. Since he is so much into vacuuming, I’ve been on the lookout for a small, regular vacuum he can use and actually help me clean. Why not make the kid work a bit? He would have fun with it, and I would gain a cleaner house. What could be better?
Last week my diligence to find a cheap vacuum paid off — I wasn’t going to spend more that $30 on this “toy.” I saw a vacuum on sale at Kohl’s that I thought would be perfect. (Do they ever not have a sale? Don jokes with me every Saturday, before he hands me the big sales insert from Kohl’s, “Oh, look, guess who’s having a sale?”)
So on the way to our monthly La Leche group meeting, I stopped at Kohl’s with Landon to get the vacuum. He loved riding in the front of the shopping card, facing forward. He turned around, smiled at me, and said, “Thissa nice!” while he was happily kicking his feet.
Off we went to the vacuum section, and we lucked out — there was one Bissell Featherweight Bagless model left. Since it was on sale and I had a Kohl’s coupon, it was only $18.95. I love a bargain! The next day we assembled it and Landon couldn’t be happier.
This little vacuum is amazing! It’s lightweight, it’s pretty quiet, and I love that you can use the short or the long handle. The first time I emptied it — after Landon must have vacuumed the same three spots thirty times over — I was amazed at how much dirt we tossed out. And it doesn’t suck up the rugs like the Hoover does.
So that’s how we came to have four vacuums in our tiny home :) How many do you have?
Update: I never went back to using the big Hoover and finally gave it away.
