Wordless Wednesday — Meet Atka, the Wolf

by Dagmar Bleasdale on April 26, 2011

Last week, Landon and I got to meet Atka, an Arctic gray wolf. Atka makes visits around Westchester to draw attention to the work of the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY, where he lives with about 20 other wolves.

There must have been about 200 other kids and parents who wanted to see Atka.

He got into the Starbucks coffee one of his handlers had put on the ground.

After opening it, he drank some and then rolled around in it to mark his territory.

I couldn’t get a picture of L with the wolf, but he was sitting right in front of me on the ground and got a very good look at Atka. He wasn’t afraid of him but also not terribly impressed. I think I was more in awe of Atka than L :)

Amazing. It isn’t every day you get to see a wolf. Hope he was able to get some positive attention from the crowd for the wolf conservation effort!

My mom loves wolves. She shares a lot of information. She used to have 2 and I know it broke her heart when she had to leave them in NM.

He is so beautiful!! I have never seen a wolf that up close before, your son is so lucky to have seen and learned about wolves in such a hands on way. On a side note, I wonder if my dog is part wolf, he is exactly that same size LOL

Amanda April 27, 2011 at 2:20 PM

Hi, it’s my first time doing WW. Hope you can visit me and comment on my terrible picture-taking (-:

Atka was beautiful! Was he all white? I’m used to seeing greyish wolves, but never saw a pure white one.

Oh, and did Starbucks sponsor the event? LOL

I didn’t know you can put a wolf on a leash, even when he’s (apparently) used to humans. I think this is a good idea for people to learn about the Wolf Conservation Center in their area.

Very cool! What a neat opportunity!

Linkytools must be having some issues tonight. I had a difficult time linking up so I apologize if it appears 35 times. ;)
Love these photos! How cool is it that L got to see a wolf up close?!? They’re such large animals, beautiful too.

Alexia April 27, 2011 at 3:15 AM

Wow! I always imagined that wolves were relatively the same size as a dog. But Atka is HUGE! Looks like a great outing and a wonderful way to get kids thinking about the nature world.

amber April 27, 2011 at 1:32 AM

Looks like a fun outing. Stop by and link up to our WW if you get time we would LOVE to have you!

Karen April 26, 2011 at 9:23 PM

Wow, you can see how big he is, compared to his handler’s height. Wolves are beautiful. Near where I went to school, in Scotland, they have a wolf sanctuary, they hope to eventually re populate the now vanished wolf population there. We got to visit, and see wloves, and their cubs. Pretty amazing!

Anna April 27, 2011 at 1:02 AM
