Not Me! Monday — Sunscreen and Cockroaches

by Dagmar Bleasdale on June 14, 2010

We did not take Landon to the Bronx Zoo for the first time on the hottest day of the year.

Plus, we of course made sure to not go on a Wednesday when entry is free for kids to avoid the 50 busloads full of school kids running around.

I did not put Landon in his T-shirt with built-in sunblock that’s really for swimming.

I thought I was so clever. Yes, it made sure that he didn’t get a sunburn, but because that material doesn’t breathe and is really only for swimming, the poor thing was sweaty and hot the whole trip.

Lesson learned: there is no getting around globbing sunscreen on the kid and having him look like a white ghost all summer.

Which brings up another thing: I would never spent $20 on ONE tube of suncreen for the kid. That’s absurd.

Well, after reading the latest study by the Environmental Working Group on ineffective and cancer-causing sunscreen, I was prepared to pay whatever it took to get suncreen that isn’t harmful to him and actually does the job right.

Landon did not get completely grossed out by the dark cave of cockroaches at the zoo.

I did NOT let Landon watch TV this morning when he decided to get up at 6:30 a.m. so that I could sleep a little longer.

I had only gone to bed at 3 a.m., so having L wake up that early, which is unusual for him, felt doubly torturous.

Don didn’t feel like getting up already either, so letting L watch TV was the only safe alternative, because he doesn’t move a muscle when he watches TV.

{I did not watch a half an hour of TV before going to bed, from 2:30 until 3 a.m. Yes, I know, crazy, but I just needed a little “me” time.}

Landon is not like me at all in that he knows exactly what he doesn’t like. He wanted to watch a certain Wonder Pets show we had DVRed, and after putting on that show, I’d crawl back into bed.

But every half hour L would scream that he wanted to see something else. So after falling asleep again I’d get up to find him another 30 minute-show.

I did not let him watch three shows before I finally got up myself…

Hi Dagmar! I found you from TwitterMoms. I love this post, so self deprecating, love it! I so remember the days when my little ones would wake up at the crack and couldn’t do a thing for themselves. I remember the best “naps” early in the morning. Good stuff.
